The wellness journey is by no means a linear, one-way street. There are countless routes to take, with a few detours and scares along the way. Events that mark the path to living healthier and fuller are unique and almost never identical. For some, wellness springs like a good idea, suddenly brought to life by a burst of inspiration. Others might share details of a health scare that compelled them to pivot from cocktails to Kombucha. As far as overall wellbeing goes, there is really is no one destination or road map. If at all, the journey continues to evolve, elevating how we perform and supporting how we show up for others.
It was only very recently when I discovered the value of spinal care and chiropractic therapy in enhancing the wellness journey. Typically, we hear about friends and family visiting their chiropractor because of an injury or accident. It never really dawned on me that regular spinal realignment, coupled by physical and laser therapy could drastically improve functional life years. The first session at INTERCARE, the Philippines’ pioneer in Complimentary Alternative Medicine, revealed the benefits of spinal health to moving, functioning and living fully.
TRAFFIC JAM IN YOUR BODY
The team begins, “Your spinal health is an important factor to maintaining overall health and well-being. Whether you are seeking pain-relief, are on the road to recovery or ready to commit to a wellness program to optimize health, we customize based on your unique needs and goals.” The session began with a thorough assessment of posture, using a Podoscope. This was followed by medical consultation and chiropractic therapy with Chiropractic Specialist, Dr. Robert Karl Winet. He explained, “This is safe, specific, controlled force, applied to a joint to restore proper function and mobility.”

The idea is to bring the spine back into its proper alignment so that the rest of the body can perform at its optimum. As the main highway that connects all our organs, the spinal column can determine how well we move, digest, breath and yes, even think. The way I understood it during consultation, poor posture is like a bad traffic jam that keeps your entire body from functioning at its best. Dr. Robert affirms: “Spinal adjustments activate and stimulate neural pathways between the brain and organs, optimizing communication between the two and thus organ function.”
A WHOLE LOT OF CRACKING AND ABSOLUTELY NO PAIN
Truth be told, I was terrified by the idea of getting my bones cracked. But he assured, “All you have to do is relax. The sounds are actually from your facet joints, being moved back in place.” With closed eyes and deep mindful breaths, the cracking began. Hips were adjusted first to bring balance to the entire upper body. An indescribable feeling of relief followed every crack and pop.
Spinal readjustments are just as essential to the body as regular tune ups are to a car. After the session, Dr. Rob recommended a sustainable treatment schedule to help maintain spinal health. He also conducted a nutritional testing method using a magnet. “This helps to isolate the vitamins, and allows us determine which supplements you need.” Apart from vitamins A and D3, he recommended a daily dose Albizia from Theralife. “Alizia is great for enhancing mood, helping with quality sleep,” he said. Taken every morning, the new addition to the supplement routine has brought clarity and calm to each day.
HEALING AND RELAXATION
At INTERCARE, experts and therapists follow a holistic approach to wellness. Apart from consultation, chiropractic therapy and nutrition assessment, other treatments are on offer to support healing, regeneration and strengthening. “We often recommend laser light therapy and myotherapy after spinal re-alignment. This allows the tissues and nerves to heal faster,” said the therapist at the newly opened Bonifacion Global City clinic.

Laser therapy is a safe and effective option for reducing pain and swelling. Using Class 4 Medical Lasers, tissue and nerves were put in a state of ease. The therapist expounded, “When our spine is realigned or corrected, our nerves and tissues are also moved back in place. Laser light allows them to heal faster. It also supports the regeneration of cells.”
Tapping helps to keep muscles and tissues in place after chiro therapy, laser light and myotherapy.
Muscles, tendons and ligaments were then kneaded with exacting, high-pressure strokes. “We are now going to do myotherapy to support the softer tissues,” the therapist queued. It was similar to a massage, but more precise and intense. She explained that unlike remedial or spa massages, myotherapy addresses the root of discomfort or injury to help rehabilitate the soft tissues.
To keep the tissue, muscles and newly realigned spine in place, tapes were attached onto the back. “This will help keep your correct posture in place. It will also support the surrounding tissues and muscles for the next few days.” She recommended keeping them on for at least 48 hours.
WALK TALL, LIVE WELL
With most days spent hunched over gadgets, it had almost become second nature to live with bad posture. As a result, breathing and overall function of the body had been unknowingly compromised for years. Before chiro therapy, chronic pains and discomforts were part of the everyday. And it kept mind and body from performing at its optimum.

Stepping out with a newly aligned spine, was like emerging back into the world a brand new person. A sense of confidence from standing taller accompanied every step. Significant ease also enhanced mindful movement on the mat. With the help of customized supplements from Theralife, days were fueled with more energy and focus. I still find myself hunching over my laptop or mobile phone, but the awareness of spinal health now always jolts me back into living well and tall.
